DIACETYL, ACETYL PROPIONYL AND ACETOIN

 

Introduction

If you’ve been around the vaping industry for some time now, I am sure you have heard of Diacetyl, Acetyl Propionyl or Acetoin atleast once. When we first started the process of creating this company we were doing a lot of research into vaping and from what we found these seemed to be the most questionable ingredients in the juices that are available.

 

Diacetyl

Diacetyl was the first chemical that was found to possibly be harmful in large doses. This concern started with a popcorn factory worker who developed “popcorn lung” which causes lung problems that are irreversible. This was found to be caused from high amounts of Diacetyl intake, which is what is used in buttered popcorn. We consume a large amount of vapor to our lungs on a daily basis as vapers. Not to the same degree as a popcorn factory worker, but enough for it to be an issue considering that we are vaping directly into our lungs instead of a second-hand approach as seen in a factory.

The diacetyl amounts that have been reported in many of the popular liquids are well above the safety limit that has been set by OSHA. Even the amounts shown as “trace amounts” in juices are well above the suggested exposure quantities.

 

Acetyl Propionyl and Acetoin

Acetyl Propionyl and Acetoin are the substitutes that arrived after the initial scare of Diacetyl and research suggests that these chemicals also can contain or convert themselves to Diacetyl. These were used to be safer alternatives to Diacetyl, but they are still considered to be potentially harmful. These two chemicals are still considered lung irritants and their chemical composition is very similar to Diacetyl.

 

Bottom Line

Recently, Dr. Farsalinos did a study that had the majority of the popular E-Liquids tested and 74.2% of them were found to contain Diacetyl or Acetyl Propionyl. Another study funded by Vapor Shark tested more juices and published all of the test results.Vaping is still in the early stages of growth and these chemicals are the ones that have drawn the most attention. There is no fool proof study showing the effect that these will have upon us as vapers. Due to how long vaping has been around, long term exposure has not been tested, but there is enough research to show that it is not a direction we want to be heading in as E-Liquid manufacturers if we can avoid it.
