What is VG and PG?

Vegetable glycerine and propylene glycol (VG and PG) are the two main ingredients in E-Liquid. Add flavouring and nicotine and that’s it. VG is an organic compound and is extracted from plants such as coconuts it is used widely throughout the medical pharmaceutical and Food Industries for a a variety of purposes.

The food industry uses VG as a preservative and thickening agent. Medical Pharmaceutical Industries use it 4 things like cough syrups, toothpastes and various different skin care products. Cosmetic companies use VG most commonly in moisturisers as it helps the skin retain its natural moisture.

What is Propylene Glycol?

Propylene Glycol is a synthetic liquid substance that absorbs water. PG is used by the Chemical food and pharmaceutical Industries and is classified as an additive that is recognised as safe for use in food. Furthermore it’s so safe that it is used as the carrier liquid for many types of of intravenous medicine in other words, it’s safe enough to be used in injections.

What is Vegetable Glycerin?

Vegetable Glycerin is much thicker than PG like cough syrup where PG is much thinner like water. Because of the thickness VG is what creates the majority of the Vapour and cloud. The higher the percentage of Vegetable Glycerin in a E-Liquid the more vapour it will produce.

What is a base Mix?

A base mix is a mixture of VG and PG combined to create a what we call in the Vaping world a Base Mix. Its suitable for Bottle Flavour Shots where the flavour in the bottle (PG) will contribute to the VG/PG mixture in the bottle. The final outcome will be the ratio you want.

Is VG safe to Vape?

Vegetable Glycerine is considered safe for human consumption and is found in many everyday food items. Vegetable Glycerine should be USP or BP Pharmaceutical grade with a 99.9% or higher rating.

VG and PG Ratios

PG provides most of the throat hit and is much better at carrying the flavouring too.  Personal taste will dictate what ratio in an e liquid that you will select. This is set out as percentages. Equal amounts such as 50% of each and is referred to as 50/50. Bear in mind that both the flavouring and the the nicotine count towards that PG percentage in a mix as they are usually supplied diluted in PG. This will reduce the amount of pure PG that is added to the mix.

What is VG and PG your E-liquid?

If you are looking for more cloud then the percentage of Vegetable Glycerin needs to be increased. This will result in liquids with the mix like 60/40, 70/30 or even 80/20 . As PG delivers more throat hit (that burning sensation at the back of your throat),  it’s less common to get juices with more PG and VG as there is much less demand for this.

Making your own E-liquid

Very few companies make a high PG version of their  liquids and when they do it’s normally in very limited range flavours. If that is something you’re looking for, making your own e-liquid isn’t difficult at all. If you can follow a simple cooking recipe, you can make your own e-liquid but until you’re ready to take the next step knowing the difference between ratios should help you decide what juice is right for you.

Can i Vape pure VG?

VG is thick and gloopy and you may have trouble for the VG to wick your coils so you can vape it. A VG base that is 100% VG is very thick and difficult to vape effectively.

Will Vaping pure Vegetable Glycerine (VG) gunk up my coils?

The VG ratio of your mixture can contribute towards your coil heads life span as VG is sweet and contains some natural sugars. Your coils will have trouble wicking and will contribute towards a ‘dry hit’.
